When do you start with weaning?

Weaning refers to the transition from a liquid diet based on breast milk or formula to one consisting of solid or semi-solid foods. One tends to start moving away from the milk-based regimen around 6 months of age, a time when Child develops various skills that will enable it to cope with this transitional feeding period.

"The Child needs to get used to the spoon."

As Dr. Deborah Auteri, a speech therapist expert in speech stimulation and weaning, reminds us: "Weaning represents a real stage in the development of Child that cannot and should not be forced or anticipated; to say that Child 'must get used to the teaspoon not only makes no sense but risks being counterproductive in its approach to food; it would be a bit like saying that Child should wear shoes even before it learns to walk to get used to using them"; therefore, everything has its time and we should not be in a hurry to wean our baby.

Common mistakes

Since the teaspoon is a tool that will help us during weaning, we need to know how to use it correctly. First of all, you should not use the teaspoon to wipe the baby's face, it is a very uncomfortable feeling, also, once inserted in the baby's mouth you should not pull it upwards because it is not a correct and appropriate movement for a Child.

Another common mistake is to buy plates and cutlery without taking into account their composition: often, dishes exposed to high temperatures can release melamine, a harmful substance that is dangerous to our children's health.

But then what materials should be chosen?

Among the recommended materials for babyfood sets of little ones is PLA, an innovative bioplastic derived from the processing of sugars found in corn, beet, sugar cane and other natural materials. It is essential that babies can experience mealtime safely, using plates, glasses and cutlery designed for them and above all safe.

How to deal with weaning?

We need to approach weaning with serenity and awareness, if Child gets dirty or spills water because instead of drinking from the flasks he drinks from a real glass nothing happens, it is a special time of getting to know and relating and as such we need to enjoy it as it comes.
